VITALITY Trial

Evaluating high-dose vitamin D3 plus calcium carbonate for musculoskeletal health in children living with HIV.

VITALITY evaluates whether high-dose vitamin D3 plus calcium carbonate improves the musculoskeletal health of children living with HIV. The trial looks at three effects: bone, muscle, and immune regulation.

What the trial measures

Children on long-term antiretroviral therapy can develop problems with bone health. VITALITY asks whether the vitamin D and calcium combination changes that picture. The outcomes are:

  • Bone density and bone turnover
  • Muscle mass and strength
  • Immune regulation

Bone and muscle complications remain a concern for children who stay on antiretroviral therapy for many years. VITALITY is BRTI’s trial of whether vitamin D and calcium can change those outcomes.
